Part 2 – The Child Who Didn’t Remember His Father
For several long seconds, no one moved.
The rain continued to fall, tapping softly against the porch roof while the silence between Alessandro and Elena grew almost unbearable.
Mateo peeked shyly from behind his mother’s leg, clutching his faded gray elephant so tightly that its fabric ears bent beneath his tiny fingers.
He looked at Alessandro with cautious curiosity.
Not recognition.
Curiosity.
It broke Alessandro’s heart.
« Mateo… » he whispered.
His voice trembled.
The little boy tilted his head.
« Mama… who is he? »
Elena closed her eyes.
That simple question struck harder than any bullet ever had.
She knelt beside her son and gently brushed a curl away from his forehead.
« This is someone who loves you very much. »
Mateo studied Alessandro again.
« Do I know him? »
Elena couldn’t answer.
Not immediately.
Instead, she looked toward Rosa, who silently took Emma by the hand.
« Come help me finish the cookies, » Rosa said softly.
Emma hesitated.
« But— »
« It’s all right. »
Emma glanced at Alessandro before following her mother into the kitchen.
The front door closed behind them, leaving only Alessandro, Elena, and Mateo standing beneath the porch light.
For the first time in over a year, they were alone.
Alessandro finally found the strength to speak.
« I looked everywhere. »
Elena lowered her gaze.
« I know. »
« I searched every city. »
« I know. »
« I buried men because they lied to me. »
« I know. »
His voice cracked.
« I thought you were dead. »
She swallowed hard.
« I wanted you to. »
The words landed like a blow.
Alessandro stared at her in disbelief.
« What? »
« I wanted you to believe we were gone. »
« Why? »
She looked at Mateo before answering.
« Because I couldn’t risk you finding us. »
His confusion deepened.
« Risk? »
« You think I took him away from you. »
« I did. »
« But I was trying to save him. »
Those words changed everything.
Alessandro’s expression hardened.
« Save him from who? »
Elena hesitated.
Then she quietly replied,
« From your world. »
Mateo tugged gently on his mother’s sleeve.
« Mama… »
« I’m hungry. »
She smiled despite the tears gathering in her eyes.
« I know, sweetheart. »
« Go wash your hands. »
« I’ll be inside in a minute. »
The little boy nodded obediently before disappearing into the house.
As soon as the door closed behind him, Alessandro stepped closer.
« My world? »
She met his eyes.
« You don’t see it anymore. »
« You’ve lived in it for too long. »
« I see exactly what it is. »
« No. »
« You’ve learned to survive inside it. »
« I never could. »
The rain soaked the shoulders of her sweater, but she didn’t seem to notice.
« For years I watched armed men outside our home. »
« I watched you answer phone calls in the middle of the night. »
« I watched people disappear after they threatened your business. »
« You always told me not to ask questions. »
His jaw tightened.
« I protected you. »
« You protected us with fear. »
« I protected you because I loved you. »
« And because of that love… »
Her voice broke.
« …our son became a target. »
Alessandro felt the ground shift beneath him.
« What are you saying? »
She reached into her coat pocket.
Folded carefully inside was a newspaper clipping.
She handed it to him.
The headline read:
LOCAL BUSINESSMAN KILLED IN APPARENT CASE OF MISTAKEN IDENTITY.
Below the article was a photograph.
Alessandro recognized the man instantly.
Marco Bellini.
One of his accountants.
He had been murdered thirteen months earlier.
« I remember. »
« You told me it had nothing to do with us. »
« It didn’t. »
Elena looked at him sadly.
« It did. »
She pointed toward a paragraph buried near the bottom of the article.
Witnesses had reported seeing a small child climbing into the victim’s vehicle moments before the shooting.
Alessandro frowned.
« That wasn’t Marco’s son. »
« No. »
« It was Mateo. »
His blood turned cold.
She spoke quietly, forcing herself to relive the worst day of her life.
« I had taken Mateo to the bakery. »
« He saw Marco’s car and ran toward it. »
« He thought it was yours. »
« He climbed into the back seat before I could stop him. »
« I was only a few seconds behind. »
Her voice trembled.
« Then the shooting started. »
Alessandro closed his eyes.
He had never been told that part.
Never.
« The police believed Marco was the target. »
« They were wrong. »
She looked directly into his eyes.
« The gunmen kept shouting… »
‘Where’s the boy?’
Silence swallowed the porch.
Alessandro felt every heartbeat become heavier.
« They weren’t looking for Marco. »
« They were looking for Mateo. »
« I didn’t tell you. »
Elena’s voice was barely audible.
« I knew what you’d do. »
« I would have found them. »
« You would have started a war. »
« I already did. »
« I know. »
« And more children would have died. »
The words echoed between them.
For the first time since finding his son, Alessandro wasn’t thinking about reunion.
He was thinking about guilt.
If Elena was telling the truth…
…she hadn’t stolen Mateo from him.
She had run because she believed it was the only way to keep their son alive.
The front door opened again.
Emma stepped onto the porch carrying two mugs of hot chocolate.
She smiled nervously.
« My mama said everybody feels better with something warm. »
The little girl handed one mug to Alessandro.
Another to Elena.
Neither of them spoke.
Emma looked from one face to the other.
Then, in the innocent way only children can, she asked,
« If you’re both crying… »
« …doesn’t that mean you’re both telling the truth? »
Neither adult had an answer.
Because for the first time in over a year…
…they were beginning to realize that someone else had been lying to both of them.
Part 3 – The Man Behind the Lie
For a long moment, no one spoke.
The rain had finally stopped, leaving the quiet street wrapped in the soft glow of the porch light. Somewhere in the distance, a train horn echoed through the night.
Emma’s innocent question lingered in the air.
« If you’re both crying… doesn’t that mean you’re both telling the truth? »
Alessandro looked at Elena.
He had spent twelve months believing she had betrayed him.
She had spent those same twelve months believing she had saved their son.
Somewhere between those two truths…
…someone had built a lie.
« Come inside, » Elena said quietly.
« You’ll wake the neighbors. »
Alessandro stepped into the modest rowhouse.
The contrast struck him immediately.
Nothing about the house suggested luxury.
The furniture was old but carefully maintained.
A patched quilt covered the sofa.
Children’s drawings decorated the refrigerator with mismatched magnets.
On one wall hung dozens of photographs.
Mateo’s first day at preschool.
Mateo feeding ducks at a pond.
Mateo carving pumpkins with Emma.
Every picture told the same story.
His son had grown up.
Without him.
Alessandro stopped before one photograph.
Mateo stood on a beach, laughing as waves chased his tiny feet.
He couldn’t remember hearing that laugh.
The realization hurt more than he expected.
« I never stopped talking about you, » Elena said softly behind him.
He turned.
« He didn’t forget you because I erased you. »
« He forgot because children can’t hold onto memories forever. »
She walked to a bookshelf and removed a small blue box.
Inside were dozens of letters.
All addressed the same way.
To Mateo’s Papa.
« I wrote one every month. »
Alessandro frowned.
« You never sent them. »
« I couldn’t. »
She handed him the stack.
« They were for the day I believed it was finally safe. »
His hands trembled as he opened the first envelope.
Today Mateo asked why snow melts.
Another.
He lost his first tooth.
Another.
He learned to ride a bicycle.
Then one written only three months earlier.
Today he looked at your picture and asked whether you were brave.
Alessandro closed the letters.
He could no longer see clearly.
A knock interrupted the silence.
Three short knocks.
Then two more.
Elena stiffened immediately.
« Who knows you’re here? » she whispered.
« No one. »
Alessandro’s instincts took over.
He motioned for everyone to stay back.
Quietly, he approached the front window and pulled the curtain aside just enough to look outside.
A black sedan sat across the street.
Its headlights were off.
A man stood beside the driver’s door, smoking a cigarette.
He wasn’t looking at the house.
He was watching it.
Alessandro recognized him instantly.
Vincent Russo.
One of his own men.
His oldest driver.
The man who had driven Elena home from the hospital the day Mateo was born.
His stomach tightened.
Vincent had been one of the people leading the search for Elena and Mateo.
If Vincent had known where they were all this time…
Everything changed.
Without taking his eyes off the street, Alessandro reached into his pocket and silently removed his phone.
He typed a single message.
Find out everything Vincent Russo has done during the last twelve months. Do it quietly. Trust no one.
The reply came almost immediately from Victor.
Already started.
A second message followed.
Boss… there’s something you need to see.
An image appeared on the screen.
It was a security photograph taken from the Moretti estate.
The timestamp…
…matched the morning Elena had disappeared.
Alessandro zoomed in.
Standing near the rear gate was Vincent.
Beside him…
…was another man.
The face was partially hidden beneath a baseball cap.
But Alessandro recognized the scar running across his jaw.
His pulse quickened.
« No… »
Elena noticed his expression.
« What is it? »
He slowly turned the phone toward her.
The moment she saw the photograph, every trace of color disappeared from her face.
« I know him, » she whispered.
« Who is he? »
« He came to me two days before I left. »
Alessandro stared at her.
« You never told me. »
« I thought he worked for you. »
She swallowed hard.
« He said you had ordered him to move Mateo somewhere safe. »
« And I believed him. »
Alessandro’s voice became dangerously quiet.
« I’ve never seen that man in my life. »
The room fell silent.
Emma looked between the adults without understanding.
Rosa slowly sat down, one hand covering her mouth.
If that stranger hadn’t worked for Alessandro…
…then someone had infiltrated his organization long before Elena disappeared.
And if Vincent had been standing beside him…
…the betrayal had come from inside the Moretti family itself.
