Part 4 – The Betrayal Inside the Family
No one spoke.
The ticking of the old kitchen clock suddenly sounded unbearably loud.
Alessandro stared at the photograph on his phone while a dozen memories crashed through his mind.
Vincent Russo.
Twenty-three years of loyalty.
Twenty-three years of absolute trust.
The man had driven his father before him.
He knew every safe house.
Every business route.
Every emergency protocol.
If Vincent had betrayed him…
…then nothing about the last year had happened by chance.
« Tell me everything, » Alessandro said quietly.
Elena nodded.
« It was two days before we disappeared. »
She sat at the kitchen table, wrapping both hands around the untouched mug of hot chocolate Emma had brought.
« He came while you were in Boston. »
« The man in the photograph? »
« Yes. »
« What did he say? »
« He introduced himself as someone from your private security team. »
« He said there had been a leak. »
« A leak? » Alessandro asked.
She nodded.
« He claimed someone inside your organization had sold information about Mateo. »
« He said the kidnappers were already watching the estate. »
Alessandro remained silent.
Every word sounded disturbingly believable.
« He told me you couldn’t trust your own people. »
« And then? »
« He said you had arranged a temporary safe house. »
« He insisted there wasn’t enough time to explain everything. »
She looked down.
« He even knew Mateo’s favorite stuffed elephant. »
Alessandro slowly closed his eyes.
Only someone very close to the family could have known that detail.
« Did Vincent speak? »
Elena nodded again.
« He didn’t say much. »
« He only told me… »
She hesitated.
« …that he had personally checked the safe house. »
« And that you’d join us in a few days. »
Alessandro’s jaw tightened.
« He lied. »
« I know. »
« I realized it after we arrived. »
Rosa quietly placed fresh coffee on the table.
No one touched it.
Emma sat on the floor beside Mateo, building a castle from wooden blocks as though nothing dangerous existed beyond the front door.
Children possessed a remarkable gift.
They could create small islands of peace while adults drowned in fear.
Alessandro’s phone vibrated again.
Victor.
He answered immediately.
« Talk. »
Victor’s voice was unusually tense.
« We searched Vincent’s apartment. »
« And? »
« He disappeared six hours ago. »
Alessandro wasn’t surprised.
« What else? »
« We found a storage locker. »
« Inside were passports. »
« Cash. »
« Several prepaid phones. »
« And photographs. »
« What photographs? »
Victor paused.
« Boss… »
« …they’ve been watching Mateo for much longer than we thought. »
A moment later Victor forwarded the images.
Alessandro opened the first one.
His chest tightened.
Mateo playing in a neighborhood park.
Another.
Walking home from preschool holding Elena’s hand.
Another.
Celebrating his sixth birthday.
Another.
Sleeping beside the window inside this very house.
The dates stretched back almost ten months.
Someone had been watching his son…
…without making a move.
Why?
Then Alessandro reached the final photograph.
His heartbeat stopped.
The picture had been taken only three days earlier.
Emma stood beside Mateo outside the neighborhood bakery.
Both children were laughing.
Across the street…
…Vincent sat inside a parked sedan.
Watching them.
Alessandro slowly lowered the phone.
« They know where we are. »
Elena looked at him.
« They’ve always known. »
He nodded.
« They never lost you. »
« They were waiting. »
« For what? »
He answered without hesitation.
« For me. »
A loud knock echoed through the house.
Everyone froze.
Three slow knocks.
Exactly the same pattern as before.
Rosa’s face turned pale.
« Please tell me that’s the police. »
Alessandro was already moving.
This time he didn’t approach the window.
He quietly removed the pistol concealed beneath his jacket.
The familiar weight settled naturally in his hand.
He signaled for Elena to take the children into the hallway.
She obeyed without argument.
Another knock.
Then a man’s voice.
« Package delivery. »
Alessandro frowned.
At nearly ten o’clock at night…
No delivery company operated in this neighborhood.
The voice came again.
« Special delivery for Miss Emma Greene. »
Emma looked confused.
« I didn’t order anything. »
Alessandro glanced through the peephole.
No delivery truck.
Only a man wearing a brown courier uniform.
One package rested at his feet.
The courier smiled directly into the hidden camera above the door.
Too directly.
He knew it was there.
Alessandro stepped backward.
« Nobody opens that door. »
Victor’s voice suddenly exploded through the phone speaker.
« Boss! »
Alessandro raised the phone.
« What? »
« Our bomb technician just identified the courier company. »
« So? »
« They shut down three years ago. »
Silence.
Then Emma quietly tugged Alessandro’s sleeve.
« Sir… »
He looked down.
She pointed toward the small package visible beneath the door.
« There are wires. »
For a fraction of a second…
…everyone stopped breathing.
The smiling courier outside wasn’t delivering a package.
He was delivering a message.
