More than a week after the heartbreaking loss of 18-year-old Nolan Wells, his family is preparing to say goodbye in the way they believe he would have wanted.
Speaking publicly for the first time since his death, Nolan’s mother, Christine Wonsley, shared emotional details about the upcoming funeral while standing beside her husband, Elmore Wonsley Jr., and civil rights attorney Ben Crump.
Although grief remains overwhelming, Christine said her family has made one decision very clear.
They refuse to let Nolan’s life be remembered only by the circumstances of his death.
Instead, they want people to celebrate the joyful, compassionate, and energetic young man who touched so many lives.
A Celebration of Nolan’s Life
Christine explained that the funeral will be more than a traditional service.
It will be a gathering of everyone who played an important role in Nolan’s journey—family members, lifelong friends, classmates, football teammates, former teammates, and even athletes who once competed against him on the field.
Football had been one of Nolan’s greatest passions, and his family wants every teammate who shared that experience with him to have the opportunity to pay their respects.
To help make that possible, the family has already worked with Coach Les George to ensure players from every chapter of Nolan’s football career can attend.
According to Christine, that’s exactly what her son would have wanted.

During the news conference, Christine became emotional as she described how she hopes people will remember her son.
She explained that Nolan was full of life and would never have wanted those who loved him to spend the day overwhelmed by sadness.

For those unable to contribute to the family’s fundraising efforts, she offered reassurance.
She said continued prayers and emotional support mean just as much.

Her One Request Before the Funeral
Before ending her remarks, Christine made one heartfelt request to anyone planning gatherings or demonstrations in Nolan’s memory.
She asked that everything remain peaceful.
According to his mother, Nolan never believed in violence and would never have wanted anger to overshadow the values he lived by.

Funeral Arrangements
Christine later confirmed additional details for supporters wishing to honor Nolan’s memory.
The funeral service is scheduled for Monday, July 20, at Center Point Church in Ocean Springs.
Visitation will take place from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., immediately followed by the funeral service.
Afterward, close family members and invited guests will gather for a private celebration of Nolan’s life at the Jackson County Fairgrounds.
Because of the large public response surrounding the case, security will be present at both locations, and attendance at the post-funeral gathering will be limited to invited guests with passes.
Christine also invited supporters to wear a specific shade of blue in Nolan’s honor during the service—a color chosen to represent his memory and the love so many continue to have for him.
The Family Continues Seeking Answers
Even as they prepare to lay Nolan to rest, his family says their search for answers is far from over.
Christine and Elmore have continued speaking publicly about the unanswered questions surrounding Nolan’s death after he disappeared during a boating trip to Mississippi’s Horn Island on July 4.
His body was recovered two days later, but many aspects of the case remain under investigation.
The family has repeatedly stated that they want a complete, transparent, and independent investigation into everything that happened that weekend.
Their attorney, Ben Crump, has also pointed to cellphone evidence, witness accounts, and other unanswered questions that the family believes deserve careful examination.
A Mother’s Final Memory
Among the most emotional moments Christine shared was her final evening with her son.
She recalled that Nolan cooked salmon for her before leaving to spend the night with friends ahead of the holiday trip.
As he walked out the door, he hugged her, kissed her goodbye, and simply said,
