Part 3 — The File Marked « Project Sparrow »
The room fell silent.
Not the silence of shock.
The silence of people realizing they had misunderstood everything.
Director Samuel Reeves laid a thick gray file on the dining room table.
Across the cover, stamped in dark blue ink, were three words:
PROJECT SPARROW
Lena Brooks stared at it.
« What is that? »
Reeves didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at Eleanor, the elderly woman sitting quietly in the armchair.
« You never told her. »
Eleanor slowly shook her head.
« I promised. »
Lena frowned.
« Promised who? »
The old woman looked up with tired eyes.
« Your father. »
Every person in the room froze.
Lena’s mother, Margaret, laughed nervously.
« My husband died twenty years ago. »
Reeves met her gaze.
« The man who raised Lena did. »
The words landed like thunder.
Lena felt the floor disappear beneath her.
« What are you talking about? »
Reeves opened the file.
Inside were faded photographs.
Government reports.
Hospital records.
A newspaper clipping from twenty-eight years earlier.
The headline read:
Federal Agents Rescue Infant During Organized Crime Investigation.
Lena’s eyes narrowed.
The infant in the photograph wore a tiny knitted blanket with a stitched blue sparrow.
She recognized it instantly.
« My grandmother still has that blanket. »
Eleanor closed her eyes.
« Yes. »
« You kept it. »
Lena looked between them.
« Why? »
« Because, » Eleanor whispered, « it was the only thing your birth mother managed to wrap around you before she disappeared. »
Margaret stumbled backward.
« No… »
« That’s impossible. »
Eleanor’s voice broke.
« I wanted to tell you a hundred times. »
« But every time I tried… »
« …I remembered the promise. »
Lena could barely breathe.
« My birth mother? »
Reeves nodded.
« She was an undercover financial investigator. »
The room remained motionless.
« She infiltrated one of the largest money-laundering networks on the East Coast. »
« When her identity was exposed… »
« …she vanished. »
Lena swallowed.
« And me? »
« You became the most important witness who couldn’t even speak. »
Reeves slid another photograph across the table.
It showed a younger Eleanor carrying a baby through a courthouse parking garage while two federal agents surrounded them.
« The operation was codenamed Project Sparrow. »
« You weren’t just rescued. »
« You were hidden. »
Lena stared at the picture.
« I don’t remember any of this. »
« You were six months old. »
Another page followed.
This one contained a handwritten note.
It was addressed to Eleanor.
If anything happens to me, never let Lena know who she’s connected to until the network is completely dismantled.
The signature had been blurred for security reasons.
Margaret’s voice trembled.
« So… all these years… »
« I wasn’t hiding an unemployed daughter. »
Reeves looked at her calmly.
« No. »
« You were unknowingly protecting the last living link to an investigation that never truly ended. »
Just then, one of the officers stepped into the doorway.
« Director… »
« We have a problem. »
« What is it? »
He held up a tablet.
« The secure archive has been breached. »
Reeves’ expression changed instantly.
« Which file? »
The officer hesitated.
Then answered quietly.
« Project Sparrow. »
A cold silence swept through the house.
Someone, somewhere…
Had just discovered that Lena Brooks was no longer hidden.
And if the people who had hunted her family decades ago were still out there…
They now knew exactly where to begin looking.
